FAQ for students

Here you will find answers to the most popular questions from students but if we missed something – don’t hesitate to ask us your questions!

How can I get in touch with the lab❓

You can write to us and arrange a meeting or ask your questions:

Or visit us personally:

  • 📍room 3-66, Physics Department, Moscow State University
    (to talk to the supervisors)
  • 📍room Г-372, Г-373 и Г-308, Lomonosov building of Moscow State University
(to talk to postgraduates/research fellows/students, see the equipment)

You can also meet us at the stands of the departments of acoustics, nanophotonics, medical physics and general physics and condensed matter physics at the event “Departments from A to Z”, which is held at the Physics Department twice a year (in fall and spring).

📸 As part of “Departments from A to Z”, we also organize LIMU lab tours twice a year (in fall and spring), where you can:
• learn about our research areas
• meet LIMU members
• see the equipment
• ask your questions

Follow for lab tour announcements:
• in our telegram channel
• in our VK group
• in our lab tour chat

What coursework topics do you offer❓

To help students learn more about what you can do in our lab, we have published our research areas on a separate page.
👥 For each research area, we have also provided contacts of our lab members, who you can get in touch with if you are interested in a specific topic.
We have also listed the type of activity for each topic (experiment ⚙️ or computer modeling 💻), so that everyone can find a direction to their liking!

We have divided all research areas into:

Medical research areas
Industrial research areas
Fundamental physics research areas
When should you start doing something in the lab❓

The sooner, the better! We recommend using the opportunity to try out different labs during the first two years of your studies in order to choose the most suitable topic, activity and – most importantly – team to work with.

Is there a student competition to join the lab❓

Our lab is very active in science-wise, so we will be happy to welcome active, interested and responsible students into our team.

Usually, to join our lab, you should have under 3 lost points after first three exam sessions. But we understand that anything can happen, so this issue is typically discussed with each student individually.

What scholarships/grants do your students/postgraduates receive❓

All our students and postgraduates consistently win competitions for various scholarships and grants: we always announce the competition openings and help with the application.

What conferences do your students participate in❓

We try to involve active students in speaking at conferences as early as their 2nd year of studies.

We take part both in Russian conferences:

• International Youth Science Forum “Lomonosov”
• All-Russian School-seminar “Waves”
• Annual sessions of the Russian Acoustic Society
All-Russian Acoustic Conference
… and others.

… and in foreign conferences/symposia:
• International Symposium on Therapeutic Ultrasound
• International Congress on Ultrasonics
• Focused Ultrasound Symposium
• Acoustical Society of America Meetings
… and others.

Who does your lab collaborate with❓

Research centers:
• MSU University Clinic
• Andreev Acoustic Institute
• Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas (National Research University)
• Dmitry Rogachev Medical Center for Pediatric Hematology, Oncology and Immunology
• Pulmonology Research Institute
• Human Morphology Research Institute

When do your students start publishing in scientific journals❓

The most active students can write their first article together with their supervisor already at the end of the 2nd – beginning of the 3rd year. Everything is in your hands, and we are always ready to help!

What awaits me after studying at LIMU❓

Our graduates are usually in demand in various fields and areas – it all depends on you!

After graduating from LIMU, you can:
• continue scientific research at the Physics Department or another research institution
• go to graduate school or postdoc program abroad (some of our graduates gain foreign experience and return with it back to LIMU)
• teach at a university/school
• work in a company (either within your specialty or in other areas)
• work in IT, banking, etc.
