Guide for 1-2 year students

❓Trying to find out what you can do at the Physics Department?
❓ Looking for a lab for your course work?
❓ Dreaming of starting to push real science ASAP?
❓ Don’t know where to start?
❓ Or do you just want to broaden your horizons?

We are LIMU – Laboratory for Industrial and Medical Ultrasound, and in this article you will find:

🤯  How to choose a lab?

Based on the experience of all our students, graduates and research fellow, when choosing your future department, we recommend following to the following principles:

  1. Choose not a department but a specific lab where you will be doing your research. The name of the department often does not reflect the diversity of labs and research areas it contains.
  2. Start browsing for a lab as early as possible: read about them, come to lab tours and lectures/seminars, get to know the team, try to do some basic research. This will help you realize what type of research suits you best during the first two years (before being matched to the departments) .
  3. Be sure to check the number of recent publications/conferences and citations of a potential scientific supervisor and laboratory members. The most convenient way to find this is in the ISTINA MSU system.

🌐 Useful links when choosing your lab:

  • VK group and telegram channel of the Physics Department – they often publish news and achievements of various labs of the department, including info about lab tours and meetings with students;
  • “Departments from A to Z” – a series of events for 1-2 year students of the Physics Department, which is held twice a year (in fall and spring) to help students choose a future department;
  • ISTINA MSU System – an archive of publications, conferences and other achievements of all MSU researchers.
🔬 What can you do at LIMU?

To help students learn more about what you can do in our lab, we have published our research areas on a separate page.
👥 For each research area, we have also provided contacts of our lab members, who you can get in touch with if you are interested in a specific topic.
We have also listed the type of activity for each topic (experiment ⚙️ or computer modeling 💻), so that everyone can find a direction to their liking!

We have divided all research areas into:

Fundamental physics research areas
Medical research areas
Industrial research areas

🤝 How to meet with us or start doing research at LIMU?

Usually it is enough to show your interest by writing to us or dropping by to visit, and then the scientific supervisor or supervising postgraduate student of the specific research area will answer your questions, provide you with additional literature, invite you to help in the lab with some research, and then, if you enjoy everything and want to stay with us, you will form a topic for your course work together with your supervisor.

📨 You can write to us and arrange a meeting or ask your questions:

Or visit us personally:

  • 📍room 3-66, Physics Department, Moscow State University
    (to talk to the supervisors)
  • 📍room Г-372, Г-373 и Г-308, Lomonosov building of Moscow State University
(to talk to postgraduates/research fellows/students, see the equipment)

You can also meet us at the stands of the departments of acoustics, nanophotonics, medical physics and general physics and condensed matter physics at the event “Departments from A to Z”, which is held at the Physics Department twice a year (in fall and spring).

📸 As part of “Departments from A to Z”, we also organize LIMU lab tours twice a year (in fall and spring), where you can:
• learn about our research areas
• meet LIMU members
• see the equipment
• ask your questions

Follow for lab tour announcements:
• in our telegram channel
• in our VK group
• in our lab tour chat
